One of the most popular interior design trends 2024 is all about you-it's about showcasing your unique style by curating a collection of personalized items and oddities. This trend, often referred to as a 'gallery wall' or 'Bookshelf wealth' by Home&Texture.com, is a powerful way to express your aesthetic and make a statement with your décor choices. It's also a wonderful way to store your most treasured memories, ensuring they're always within reach.
My most cherished items are my old photos, vinyl records, some antique books I've collected throughout my design journey, and my children's old artwork. These items not only reflect my interests and passions but also remind me of my special memories and lived experiences.
Recently, when redesigning my living room, I chose to jump on the trend and showcase my personal collections in a way that added visual interest and told a story about who I am. In this blog post, I will confidently walk you through my proven process of creating a stunning display of expertly curated collections. Not only that, but I will also empower you with five simple steps to curate your own unforgettable display of collections. Get ready to showcase your treasures with confidence!"
Step 1: Find the appropriate space for your items.
When selecting the perfect spot to exhibit your collections, one of the most critical aspects to consider is the layout and arrangement of your home. Finding the appropriate wall or nook for your items will ensure your display is seen and appreciated and appears evenly spaced and manageable. With limited space, consider utilizing the walls or windows for your display. Suppose you have more space to work with. In that case, you can venture into a larger space to showcase your items, adding display cases and bookshelves to help organize.
It is crucial to find a suitable space not only for visibility but also for functionality. Placing your display at eye level will allow visitors to inspect each item up close and appreciate their details. Additionally, ensuring the items are easily accessible and within reach will encourage conversation and interaction around the display.
My living room wall was the perfect spot to create a focal point for my collections. With its large surface area and central location in the home, it was the ideal spot to display my vintage books and artwork. I envisioned a modern yet eclectic style, combining sleek lines and vibrant colors with a touch of nostalgia.
To create a visually appealing display, I mixed and matched the vintage books, arranging them on shelves I mounted on the wall. Next, I added the children's colorful artwork and photos between the books in a symmetrical pattern, adding layers of visual interest and creating a cohesive look.
Step 2: Remember lighting!
When putting together a collection for display, lighting is a crucial aspect to consider. Good lighting not only illuminates your display but also enhances the vibrancy of its colors and sets the room's mood. However, it is important to be mindful of how lighting can affect the items you display. Certain types of light can cause artwork to fade and items such as vinyl discs to warp. Therefore, ensuring that your items are displayed in proper lighting and temperature is essential.
For my redesign, I confidently installed adjustable spotlights above the collection to enhance the display of my vintage books and artwork on the wall. I carefully considered the positioning of the spotlights to ensure that each item was adequately illuminated and that the lighting wasn't too harsh or too dim. This showcases the items' intricate textures and details and creates a warm and inviting ambiance, making it an aesthetically pleasing experience for anyone who enters. To prevent fading and damage, I will also periodically rotate the items to ensure they are not exposed to direct sunlight or harsh lighting.
Step 3: Find a common theme for your display
Establishing a solid and consistent theme is essential to creating an eye-catching arrangement that accurately reflects a unique style. This theme can be based on the items being showcased, especially if they have a similar appearance, or on the colors and patterns present throughout the display.
If you struggle to find a common theme for your display, don't worry - you can always create one! Developing a cohesive theme is easy with a bit of creativity and effort. You can try putting all your pictures in a similar frame or producing a striking visual effect that perfectly links all the pieces together. With some experimentation and inspiration, you'll be able to create a display that truly stands out.
Despite their diverse characteristics, I carefully curated my wall with a color scheme that perfectly complemented my vintage books and artwork. With my keen eye for design, I selected books and artwork that shared similar hues of brown and red, undoubtedly two of the most popular colors of 2024. Then, to further enhance the presentation of my artwork, I framed them in vintage brass frames that perfectly match the dominant brown and red tones of my book collection, resulting in a stunning and harmonious display that oozes confidence and design expertise.
Step 4: Keep the focus on the pieces themselves
When creating a display with a large number of items, ensure that each item is adequately spaced to avoid a cluttered and chaotic look. The objective is to attract attention to the display while avoiding overwhelming it. To achieve this, designers often use an "anchor piece" as a reference point to strategically place other items. The anchor piece is usually the display's most significant or visually striking item.
It's worth noting that the spacing between items dramatically affects the overall aesthetic of the display. If the items are too close to each other, the display can appear cramped and uninviting. The opposite is true as well: The display can look sparse and uninteresting if the items are too far apart. The ideal spacing between items depends on the size and number of the items in the display and the size of the display itself.
In addition to spacing, the choice of background is also crucial to the success of the display. It's recommended to display items on a solid painted wall instead of printed wallpaper or a mural. A solid background provides a neutral backdrop that allows the items to stand out and capture viewers' attention. On the other hand, printed wallpaper or a mural can be distracting and take away from the items in the display.
For my display, I chose to leave the wall white, as this creates a striking contrast and makes the items stand out.
Step 5: Keep it fresh and exciting!
Updating the display over time is a great way to keep it fresh and exciting. Adding new items or rearranging existing ones can inject new life into the display and reflect your evolving tastes and interests. This flexibility allows you to create a dynamic and ever-changing display that reflects who you are at any given moment.
To safeguard against any potential fading or damage, I will rotate the items at regular intervals to ensure that they are not exposed to direct sunlight or harsh lighting.
Curating personal collections for home displays is not just about showcasing items; it is about creating a space that reflects your personality and tells a story about who you are. By thoughtfully arranging and displaying your collections, you can transform your living space into a unique and personalized sanctuary that is truly one of a kind. So dust off those vintage books, hang up those vinyl records and create a display that speaks to your soul.
